A Case Study in the UK: How Does Community Cultural Development
Social Justice Work Impact Communities?

For this independent study project, I'll be working alongside an England-based organization called Journey to Justice (JtoJ). Their mission is to "galvanize people to take action for social justice through learning about human rights movements and the arts".

There is growing research that shows the advantages of the arts to community social work methodology but even with this purported positive influence of the arts, skepticism remains in the US due to the elusiveness of its specific benefits. To address these concerns, this qualitative case study will examine the following research questions:
-
What are the specific benefits to a community and its members from participating in arts-based community social work?
-
How does including local stories of social justice within arts-based initiatives make a difference in the outcomes of the work?
This study uses in-depth interviews with community partners and volunteers from JtoJ to examine how regional engagement in social justice efforts has changed through the presence of programming which includes an arts-based approach.
